FAQ

  • Can I lose weight doing Pilates?

Pilates is primarily a strength training exercise. As we age our bodies lose muscle. Muscle is the biggest predictor of our metabolism. Doing Pilates will help you build muscle without becoming bulky. So it can help you lose weight.

Your body will also change shape doing Pilates. You will stand up straighter, your abdominals will be more engaged and flatter and your shoulders will stack on top of your hips. Even if you don’t lose a pound- you will look like you have because your posture and body shape will be stronger and straighter.

  • How many classes a week should I do?

I tell my clients that it is a very personal decision. It depends on your financial and time budget. One class a week is better than nothing because you will be more aware of your posture on a weekly basis and you will develop more strength and stability.

Two times a week and you will get into a rhythm and the benefits will come much faster, so will your understanding of the practice. Additionally, it helps you stay committed.

Three days a week or more and you are really going to see progress. At this mark, I would also recommend taking Mat Pilates in addition to Reformer.

  • What if I have a back injury?

Always check with your doctor first. In most cases, Pilates is beneficial for people with back injuries. Our team is very familiar with common back issues such as osteoarthritis, fused vertebrae, degenerative disk disease, scoliosis and spondylosis/spondylolisthesis.

There are countless modifications that can be made to improve your comfort and practice within the the guidelines of your Physician or Physical Therapist’s movement parameters. (We are happy to work with them.)

In most cases, developing core strength is extremely helpful for back conditions.

  • Can I still do Pilates if I have had a hip or knee replacement?

Heck Yea! We have seen hundreds of clients with hip replacements, knee replacements, shoulder injuries, broken toes, broken feet, broken wrists and much more. We can help you modify for just about every orthopedic issue.

  • Why is Pilates so expensive?

I’m a nurse and also a personal trainer and this is my answer. I honestly believe that I have learned as much about the human body teaching Pilates as I did in nursing school. Our training is extensive and our experience vital.

Pilates classes are small, giving you individualized attention from a highly trained instructor. It’s not the cookie cutter training you would get at the gym. We are hands on and we care about you!!!
